In this episode, I discuss one of the last taboos, “money,” and my motivations when deciding which business to start. I was inspired to write this piece because I am working behind the scenes to revive my wellbeing business, and if I said I was très excited, it would be an understatement

“I’m making money”

On a basic level of needs, when looking at my motivation for starting a business, the first thing would be to make money.   I do not feel that there should be guilt around this, as money or currency is a form of exchange. Some people may even talk about how it is an energy if we go down one rabbit hole.

Money can be a topic which can be emotional to some, it could be about whether they are surviving or thriving. It can also be used as a measurement to see if a system you have incorporated is working.  One online marketing guru, Amy Porterfield, specialises in building lists for potential customers, and not too long ago, I saw her advert in my FaceBook feed where she repeats throughout her commercial, “I’m making money!”

“To thrive, rather than to survive”

“Doing something you’re passionate about” is an important aspect to consider once you’ve taken care of your basic needs. This is also known as self-actualisation, according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. I tend to refer to this model when discussing the different levels of needs. Due to my upbringing, the priority was placed on doing a job to earn a living and support oneself, with enjoyment or passion being secondary. However, my views on this have since changed. I now see the importance of my wellbeing, such as working in an environment where I feel respected and safe from harassment, bullying or unreasonable behaviour. Even if one has a thick skin, negative or toxic behaviour will still have an impact. After all, the working day can take up a significant portion of one’s daily life.

Purpose

Life can be fulfilling and satisfying when you feel that you are doing something valuable, especially when it involves helping and improving society. I find it meaningful to empower people and boost their self-confidence. In today’s world, it can be challenging to know how to achieve happiness. Advertisements, marketing campaigns, and social media often send subliminal messages that make us feel inadequate, unworthy, unattractive, and flawed. They then offer quick solutions to fix these perceived flaws. We can change our approach to how we deal with these images, be more suave and ask questions like, is it the truth? We now are aware of the terms airbrush, and see how the infamous Kardashian family have altered images so much that it does not look like the actual person or any person!

When you know, you know

I like to end things, including ex-relationships, on a positive note. I would like to remind you to trust your inner wisdom and instinct. So I trusted that I was on the right path with my new business idea, as it lit something up within me. I knew I was on to a good thing. “When you know, you know”

Question: What is your main motivator when it comes to decisions about business or work?
